Printmaking classes with Jane Duke

Coronavirus measures - all workshops in the studio are currently suspended

I hold these small and friendly printmaking classes in my home studio in York (see the map at the bottom of the page). All materials and refreshments are included in the cost; all you need to bring is an apron or old shirt. The set of lino or wood cutting tools you use will be yours to keep* and additional materials can be purchased on the day to take home so you can continue developing your new skills. To read some comments from students, please click here.
*not applicable to mini monoprint or collagraph/drypoint class

For information on how to book or request a date, please scroll down to below the workshop descriptions.

One-day and morning workshops

Mini Monoprint collagraph of a hare

Mini Monoprints - morning

Learn to create texture, shading and detail by clever wiping of the ink on a flat plate during this morning workshop. Only the outline of an animal or bird will be on the ready prepared 10 x 10 cm collagraph plate; the rest of the image is created by you. Several plates will be available for you to try, so you can make different images during the morning or concentrate on getting one just right.

9.30am - 1.00pm
Maximum class size 2

Linoprint image of a cat

Reduction Linoprint - one day

During this linocut workshop you will learn how to make a two-colour reduction linoprint. Ideal both for beginners and those who have previously tried simple one-colour linoprints. At the end of the day you will have several copies of your print to take home. The set of cutters you use on the day will be yours to keep.

(This workshop was previously called Introduction to Linoprint)

10.00am - 4.00pm
Maximum class size 4

Two-day workshops

Hand Printed Woodcut - two days

During this two day woodcut workshop you will carve two wooden blocks to create a two tone image which you will then ink and hand burnish onto fine paper - no press required! At the end of the weekend you will have several copies of your print to take home. The set of cutters you use on the day will be yours to keep.

10.00am - 4.00pm two days
Maximum class size 4

printing a collagraph

Collagraph and Drypoint - two days

Discover two methods of printmaking in this two day class, both of which can produce painterly effects with clever wiping and manipulation of ink. You will use the etching press in my studio to produce your prints and will finish the weekend with several collagraph and drypoint prints to take home.

10.00am - 4.00pm two days
Maximum class size 2

How to book your place

  1. Please check the workshop descriptions above to see if there is already a date open for booking for your choice of workshop. If there is and it is a day that suits you then that's great! Just go ahead and click on the 'Book now' button to reserve and pay for your place. (You can also check the 'Open Workshops' page for a clear list of any dates already arranged and open for booking.)
  2. If no dates are open for booking, or you can't do those dates, please choose a date from the suggestions listed on the form below. Once I know someone wants to attend on a particular date I will look at opening that date for booking.
  3. I will contact you to let you know you can now reserve and pay for your place.
  4. Please note: all workshops run subject to receiving enough bookings, so if there is already a date taking bookings then that workshop is more likely to run than a new date you choose (unless several of you are booking together) - so where possible please opt for an existing date.
  5. If you are booking a place as a gift, please ask for a printable gift certificate to be sent to you with your booking confirmation.

Suggested dates will change according to availability. If you'd like to hear about new dates as they are added, please subscribe to the newsletter or follow me on Facebook or Twitter through the links at the bottom of the page.

If there are several of you wishing to book together you can arrange your own day or weekend. See details further down the page.

Pick a date for an open workshop

Please use this form* to ask me to arrange a new workshop on one of the available dates listed. (Be careful to enter your email address correctly and please remember to tick the 'I'm not a robot' box.) Please note that as workshops are arranged, the remaining available dates may be removed or altered.
