a two tone woodcut print of the ruins of Whitby Abbey
Limited edition of 40.
Image size 30 x 22 cm (approx 12 x 8.75") Paper size approx 40 x 30 cm
This handmade print on fine Japanese Tosa Shi paper is a moody and atmospheric study of the ruins of Whitby Abbey on the North Yorkshire coast of England, about 50 miles from my home
Rather than being passed through a press, the tranquil image has been printed by careful hand burnishing from the back of the paper with a bamboo baren. The process was repeated with two plates, each with different tones of a soft blue grey. This is labour intensive but allows the printmaker to vary the pressure and so achieve stronger and softer effects where wanted. It also means that each print made is unique and the one you receive may have slight differences from the images here.
Tosa Shi paper has two different sides. For this print the slightly rougher and more absorbent surface was used to achieve a soft and subtly textured image.
The title, edition number and artist's signature are written in pencil under the image.
