CHARLES REID WATERCOLOUR WORKSHOP
Urchfont Manor, Wiltshire, England
Sunday 6 - Sunday 13 September 2009

Charles Reid

The Tutor

Charles Reid is an award-winning artist, teacher and author known around the world. He has authored eleven books on painting which are directed toward students at all levels. He is an enthusiastic and engaging tutor, generous and encouraging in his advice and constructive in his suggestions and analysis of students’ work.

This workshop presents a rare opportunity to paint with Charles in the United Kingdom.

The Venue

Urchfont Manor in Wiltshire dates from the 17th century.  Since 1947 it has been a residential learning and conference centre.  All bedrooms are en-suite.  Set in 10 acres of beautiful parkland, it is just a few miles from the historic market town of Devizes and within easy reach of Stonehenge, Avebury, Longleat and Bath. The grounds include a walled garden, orchards, croquet lawns and magnificent mature trees.  The village of Urchfont itself is quintessential rural England with thatched cottages, a duck pond, village greens and a 14th century church.

Non-painting partners are most welcome to stay with us in the accommodation and join us for our meals and socialising.  The venue is an excellent base for touring and sight-seeing or simply relaxing.

The Course

"Learning to simplify will be the goal of the class. I use the same approach for figure, still life, and landscape.
First we'll use contour drawing, concentrating on interconnecting shapes, rather than separate objects.
We'll practice "Direct Painting" using as few over washes as possible, concentrating on good paint consistency: (the correct ratio of water and paint when the brush is loaded).  The hope will be to achieve the correct color, edge variety and tonal value on the first try."
 Charles Reid

Beginners are welcome but must have some experience with watercolour. In order to get the most out of the course, it is strongly recommended that all students have read Charles’ books, Painting Flowers in Watercolour and Charles Reid's Watercolour Solutions, looking especially at the sections on palette setup and then practicing the exercises on brush work, mixing colour and understanding Local Colour Value.

We will work indoors from still life, flowers and models and, weather permitting, outdoors from scenery and buildings. You will need to bring your own materials and equipment.
