Brushes:
Round brushes size 6, 8, 10.
You will rarely need anything smaller than a 6
unless you are painting miniatures or highly detailed pictures (eg
botanical illustration). There are many different shapes of brushes
available which can be very useful, but there is little you cannot do with
a good round brush.
Paper:
'NOT' watercolour paper
(also
called 'cold pressed'). Minimum 140lb/300gsm to avoid excessive
cockling. I most commonly use Bockingford 140lb or 200lb or Saunders
Waterford 300lbs.
Other essentials:
Masking fluid and
applicators.
Water pot.
An easily cleanable palette with large mixing areas.
An HB
and/or 2B pencil and a sharpener. I use a propelling pencil with
means I always have a sharp point.
Kneadable eraser (also known as a putty rubber). Avoid ordinary erasers
as these damage the paper.
A board and gummed tape for stretching paper.
Paper kitchen towel.
Cotton wool buds.
